ASUU WAS NOT TAKEN TO COURT, MINISTER OF LABOUR NGIGE REVEALS

Dr. Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment has clarified that the Federal government did not take the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to court over its lingering strike action.
The Minister made this known of recent, explaining that he personally referred the case to court because there had been series of failed negotiations between both parties since the strike started in February.

He stated that transmitting the case to the National Industrial Court was in accordance with Section 17 of the Trade Dispute Act of Nigeria, as inability to take such action meant he had failed in carrying out his responsibility.
In summary, he said: “We have to counsel our brothers on negotiation. You cannot say is either you give me Two Hundred Percent (200%) or I will continue my strike. There are law guiding strikes and no negotiation is forced. There are ILO principles on the right to strike but there are things that follow it when you embark on strike as a worker and they are enshrined in the laws of our land. This country must be guided by laws”.
