REAL MADRID 2-1 ATLETICO: MADRID TOPS LA LIGA TABLE AFTER WINNING THE DERBY

Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid 1-2 at the Civitas Metropolitano Sunday night in the Madrid derby to maintain a 6-match winning run in La Liga this campaign.

Los Rojiblancos started the game looking the more purposeful of the two sides as Felipe headed wide in front of goal, and Griezmann’s strike forced a save from Courtois in the first ten minutes of play.

However, it was Los Blancos who would open the scoring in the 18th minute when Tchouameni floated a through ball on the path of Rodrygo who had made a perfect run, for him to volley beyond Oblak for a 0-1 lead in favor of Real Madrid.

Los Blancos continued to look very dangerous on the counter as Atletico resorted to a patient build-up towards their opponent’s area, hoping to breach a resolute central defense mounted by Militao and Alaba.

Madrid’s counterattack paid off again in the 36th minute when Modric’s through ball released Vinicius on goal, only for his shot to rebound off the goal post, but Valverde would not miss the rebound as he shot into the net to give Madrid a 0-2 lead.

The tempo of the game slowed considerably in the second half, and it became a back-and-forth affair. Hermoso reduced the tally for Atletico in the 83rd minute in a scramble at Madrid’s goal mouth after a corner kick, to bring the scores to 1-2.

The scores remained at 1-2 till the end of proceedings for Real Madrid to come away from Civitas Metropolitano with their 6th La Liga win this season, which takes them back to the top of the table after Barcelona had displaced them temporarily with a 3-0 win over Elche on Saturday.
